“My passion goes beyond my own child’s needs, it lives in my need to make the world right for all Trans youth”
Founder of TransFamily Support Services
For more than 30 years, Kathie Moehlig has been a public speaker, workshop presenter, nonprofit development coordinator, and support-group leader. She’s a certified life coach, an ordained minister and a certified parenting instructor.
As a parent advocate for her transgender son, Kathie helped navigate his journey. As a result of their family’s ongoing experience, the need to help others became more and more apparent. In early 2015, Kathie founded
TransFamily Support Services (TFSS), a nonprofit organization in San Diego serving transgender and gender nonconforming youth and their families. TFSS provides individual and family coaching to facilitate acceptance
and support, assists with healthcare and insurance issues, helps families navigate the legal system, and advocates for resources and support at schools for transgender and gender-nonconforming youth and their families.
At the school site and district levels, teachers and students become more comfortable and feel safer with open dialogue as educators are given language and tools to assist students and families in the broader community. Kathie provides workshops and training programs for faculty and staff in LGBTQ awareness, vocabulary use, understanding and implementing state and federal laws, and how to adopt best practices as policy.
Kathie works with medical and mental health professionals, from the front desk receptionist to the physician in the back office ,pointing to resources both medically and procedurally. Providing emergency rooms and urgent care centers with knowledge about trans issues, and access to resources to support specific needs, creates prepared, safe, and effective treatment for all patients. Kathie tirelessly advocates for transgender acceptance in the social, medical, educational, media, and legal communities.
