May 18th will mark four years since we lost Kyler Prescott to suicide at the age of fourteen. As we prepare for the launch of the mentoring program that bears his name, TransFamily Support Services would like to take a moment to remember Kyler.

Kyler was many things. He was a poet, a musician, and an outspoken advocate for social justice issues. He loved animals and believed strongly in equality for all. His family loved and supported him and continues to fight the good fight in his name.  In his honor, transgender youth in the San Diego area will have one more resource in the new mentoring program, Kyler’s Konnections.

Kyler’s legacy will live on locally through the new mentoring program Kyler’s Konnections. The program will pair local trans youth with adult trans mentors who can help them on their journeys of transition. We are excited to offer this program because even when trans kids and young adults are supported by family, as Kyler was, they still need to have access to role models like themselves. The phrase “representation matters” doesn’t just apply to the big screen. It applies to real life.

In his short time on this Earth, he brought laughter and light to so many, but the burden Kyler bore was heavy. As we approach the fourth anniversary of his death, it is important to remember that while progress may take time, we are definitely seeing it happen. Every day, the fight continues for trans rights and acceptance. Today we march on in Kyler’s honor.

What a difference one person can make. Thank you, Kyler.
